Stainless Steel - Architectural Rigging Support Systems Structural Dynamics

RECENT PROJECTS

KEY SUPPLIERS FOR NEW BANGKOK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (NBIA)

The Structural Dynamics team have recently proven successful as key suppliers of Stainless Steel tension systems for one of the largest and most comprehensive facade engineering projects to date.

Officially opened in late September 2006, the New Bangkok International Airport (or Suvanabhumi Airport as it is now known) is considered “A stunning architectural achievement..probably the largest glass structure in the world.” (Laminated Glass News, Edition #34)

  • Structural Dynamics were involved in three aspects of the NBIA project:
  • The structural glass facade for the main terminal.
  • Passenger loading bridge and concourse ‘D’
  • Entrance bridge and exit stairs to the main terminal

THE MAIN FACADE

The main terminal’s enormous glass facade is the result of exemplary collaboration between architects and engineers, and sets a new standard in facade engineering technology.

Approximately 34,000 m2 (365,973 sq ft) of laminated glass is used in the 40m tall facade. A network of vertical pylons, spaced at 9m intervals, comprise the facade’s structural support. These are the only fixed structures in the facade design, which consists of a network of horizontal lattice beams and “spider” point holders, connected with high-tension Dyform Wire.

Structural Dynamics tension systems proved to be the perfect solution for such a demanding and high-profile application. Replacing the need for bulky support framework, the elegant Stainless Steel components have a low visual impact, and are aesthetically appealing. This gives the facade on the whole a powerful presence, and also allows maximum solar gain.

PASSENGER LOADING BRIDGE/MAIN TERMINAL ENTRANCE

For the extensive balustrades bordering the passenger loading bridge and entrance to the main terminal, Structural Dynamics components also met the demand for a high-profile, aesthetic result.

With equally important requirements for both safety and visual appeal, the balustrade components provide a sleek, high-profile finish which contributes to the prestige of the terminal as a whole.
